Elements of Design
This week we learned about different elements of design.
First, we learned about point. Points in design or art are stable in a visual plane. A focal point is a good example of what a point would look like. Points can carry a lot of weight if they are done well. For example, they can create tension if they are off-center or peace if they are directly in the center. Some examples of focal points could be light fixtures, accent walls, artwork, reception desks, and sometimes manipulation of light. Along with single points of focus, there are also two points that connect. This creates an axis within a space, like two pieces of furniture that create an invisible line in a room. These can also create passages through a space as well.
Next, we learned about lines. Different lines create different feelings. There are horizontal lines, which give the illusion of a bigger space and a sense of stability. Next, there were vertical lines that created upward movement and feelings of grandeur. These are commonly used in entryways and can also be used to enlarge a space upwards. There are also diagonal lines, which create an unbalanced, energetic, and dynamic space. These can also create movement throughout a space. Curved lines can create a sense of peace and flow when used in a building.
Next, there are planes. These consist of Walls, Floors, and Ceilings. These are all pretty self-explanatory.
Space and volume consist of positive space and negative space. Positive space can be a solid architectural element or furniture used in the house, or anything that is taking up space. Negative space is more of a void. This would be compared to an empty room, it is there but nothing is in it. Space can also be compared to forms. Forms would be mostly positive space, such as a piece of furniture or columns. Many forms, especially the shapes of these forms, should be repeated within a house to create more unity in a space.
Sketchbook #2: Upside Down Interior

Your blog is short and sweet. Your definitions of the terms we learned about were clear. The room that you drew was very intriguing, I wish I could see what the real room looked like!
ReplyDeleteI love how your blog is descriptive without being unnecessarily wordy. You covered all of the main topics and were able to give specific details about each of them. I really liked what you said about how different lines can create different feelings. I think that is a very accurate description.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you described point line plane and volume. you described it in an easy to understand way but still very thorough way :)

ReplyDeleteEliana,
I appreciate that you posted your blog early in the week. This gave fellow classmates the opportunity to view your thoughts. I also, enjoyed reading your summaries on point, line, plane and form. I wish you would have included some images to support your information.
Your upside down drawing was great. Next time write something on that experience and what it taught you. Total points: 50/50
